1st Generation

Yang Luchan

1799 - 1872

"Yang the Invincible" & Founder

From a servant in Chen Village to the Imperial Court of Beijing. He founded the Yang style and remained undefeated throughout his life.

2nd Generation

Yang Jianhou

1839 - 1917

Creator of "Middle Frame"

Son of the founder, Yang Luchan. A bridge between the combat-focused early years and the health-focused future. He harmoniously blended hard and soft techniques.

3rd Generation

Yang Chengfu

1883 - 1936

The Standardizer

Grandson of the founder, Yang Luchan, and son of Yang Jianhou. He opened Tai Chi to the public, creating the "Large Frame" practiced by millions today. His 1930s books set the visual standard.

4th Generation

Cheng Man-ch'ing

1901 - 1975

"Master of Five Excellences"

A disciple of Yang Cheng-fu with rare access to the master's inner teachings. The "Professor" who brought Tai Chi to the West in the 1960s. Creator of the 37 Posture Form and a master of painting, poetry, and medicine.

5th Generation

William C.C. Chen

1933 - Present

Grandmaster & Pioneer

One of Professor Cheng's youngest and favorite students, often serving as his training partner for "push hands" and his translator. Innovator of Body Mechanics and the 60 Movement Form. Actively teaching in NYC at 91+.

6th Generation

Nick Scrima

Active

Desciple & Promoter

Senior student of Grandmaster William C.C. Chen for 40+ years. Also studied with Grandmaster Tao Bingxiang - another senior disciple of Professor Cheng. He founded the International Chinese Martial Arts Championship, one of the largest and most respected tournaments in the world.

7th Generation

Student of Master Nick Scrima for 20+ years. Attended workshops with Grandmaster William C.C. Chen. Gold and Bronze Medalist in the International Chinese Martial Arts Championship.
